Every Child is Born a Poet follows the life of Piri Thomas from his beginnings on the rough streets of El Barrio (Spanish Harlem) through his prison experience to his place as one of the leading chroniclers of life in urban America. The film captures Thomasí unbridled creativity with a mix of storytelling, spoken-word poetry performances, stylized dramatizations, and scenes of his on-going work of forty-five years as an educator and activist empowering marginalized and incarcerated youths. Every Child is Born a Poet includes a spellbinding collage of rare archival film footage, still photographs, and mixed-media artwork by artist Juan Sanchez. Pulsating with an original Afro-Cuban Latin Jazz score by composers Kip Hanrahan and John Santos, the film is a riveting portrait of a life lived through struggle, self-discovery, and transformation.
